Shahid Afridi Appointed Sports Ambassador of Sindh Police Sports Board

A New Role for a National Icon

Former Pakistan cricket captain Shahid Khan Afridi has been appointed Sports Ambassador of the Sindh Police Sports Board. The appointment was formalised at a special ceremony held at the Central Police Office, where Sindh Inspector General of Police Javed Alam Odho presented Afridi with a certificate confirming his new role. The two also exchanged shields during the ceremony, marking the occasion with appropriate formality.

A Personal Connection to the Role

Afridi, who was born in Karachi, expressed genuine enthusiasm for the appointment, describing it as both a matter of happiness and honour. He recalled that joining and playing for the Sindh Police cricket team had been a childhood dream, and noted that the Sindh Police once fielded three cricket teams. For Afridi, the role carries personal significance that extends beyond a ceremonial title.

IG Odho Welcomes the Appointment

Welcoming Afridi to his new position, IG Odho thanked him for accepting the role and described his association with the Sindh Police as an honour for the institution. Odho stated that Afridi’s involvement would strengthen efforts to promote sports within the police force and bring greater visibility to the department’s sporting initiatives.

Sports as a Priority for Sindh Police

The Inspector General emphasised that promoting sports has always been among the priorities of the Sindh Police, with support from the business community also helping the department organise sporting activities. He outlined the core objective of these activities as encouraging young people to engage in healthy and positive pursuits, noting that sports help develop discipline, teamwork, and a positive attitude while steering youth away from drugs and other negative influences.

Afridi’s Commitment to the Mission

Speaking at the ceremony, Afridi confirmed his commitment to the role, stating that he would continue to provide all possible support to promote sports and encourage young people to participate in healthy sporting activities. Given his stature as one of Pakistan’s most recognisable sporting figures, his involvement is expected to lend significant credibility and reach to the Sindh Police Sports Board’s programmes going forward.
